W.698, Single leaf of a Mughal court scene

Abstract

This Mughal painting, attributable to the twelfth century AH / eighteenth CE, depicts a court scene with a learned man addressing a seated Mughal ruler, most probably Jahāngīr (d. 1037 AH / 1627 CE). The painted images of Jesus and Mary behind him are found in other illustrations and are attested to in extant murals from Mughal India. On the back are Persian verses written in nastaʿlīq script. The text is surrounded by an illuminated floral border comparable to those produced during the reign of Shah Jahan (r. 1037 AH / 1628 CE -- 1068 AH / 1657 CE).
