W.713, Single leaf of a portrait of Shah Abbas I

Abstract

According to the inscription in the upper panel, this painting depicts the Safavid ruler Shāh ʿAbbās I (r. 996 AH / 1588 CE -- 1038 AH / 1629 CE). It was likely produced in India in the twelfth century AH / eighteenth CE. The Safavid ruler is shown in a stylized landscape. On the verso of the leaf is a sample of calligraphy in nastaʿlīq script quoting verses by the Persian poet Saʿdī Shīrāzī (d. 691 AH / 1292 CE). These verses were executed in Samarqand by Muḥammad Amīn ibn Bābā Jān in 990 AH / 1582-3 CE.
